Road Tolls in Norway - Autopass or something else?
In Norway, there are many toll roads. Payments can be made in three main ways. This text focuses specifically on the Autopass system, which allows you to pay less for tolls, even with a car registered in foreign country.
1) Paper invoice sent to your home address months after the trip (full price).
2) Registration in the Epass24 system (full price).
3) Registration in the AutoPass system and ordering an AutoPass tag (discounted toll fees).
If you only make an occasional short trip to Norway or your destination is in Northern Norway, the first option is also a good choice. When driving past a toll station, a photo of your car’s license plate is automatically taken, and a paper invoice is sent to your home address months after the trip without requiring any action. Registering with the Epass24 system, on the other hand, allows toll charges to be processed more quickly, but this option also does not provide any discounts.
The third option is to register with the AutoPass system and order an AutoPass tag to be delivered to your home before the trip. The main benefit of this option is the discounts on tolls and ferry payments. In short, if your trip is to Southern Norway, where there are significantly more road tolls compared to Northern Norway, or if you plan to make multiple trips to Norway over the years (which is quite likely if you visit once), ordering an AutoPass tag and attaching it to your windshield may be the best option. Below, we’ll cover the discounts available with the AutoPass system and provide a step-by-step guide to ordering an AutoPass tag.
Below you can find useful websites when planning a road trip to Norway:
Bomstasjon website: More information about toll prices in Norway and the locations of toll stations on the map. As the map shows, most tolls are found in Southern Norway and near the larger cities. If you’re only driving in Northern Norway or prefer smaller roads over major highways and visit smaller towns, you might not encounter many toll roads. However, the AutoPass tag will quickly pay for itself due to its discounts.
Vegvesen website: When driving in Norway, it’s a good idea to check the latest road conditions before your trip to avoid surprises, such as if your planned route or tunnel is closed due to an accident, roadworks, or roadblock.
Autopass system and discounts
Below are the most common and important discounts available with the AutoPass tag. The tag is attached to the inside of the vehicle’s windshield, and when passing a toll station, the following discounts are automatically applied. Payments can be made via email invoice or automatically charged to the payment card added when ordering the tag.
– 20% discount on road, bridge, and tunnel tolls in Norway
– 10% discount on ferry crossings in Norway
In addition to the basic discounts, you can also receive additional discounts, especially on ferry crossings or even on bridges in Denmark, by adding your AutoPass tag number to separate agreements. Read more about these further down this page and collect the discounts that are best suitable for your trip.
How to order an Autopass tag?
Ordering an AutoPass tag begins with signing a contract with one of the following toll service providers.
I went through different service providers’ websites and decided to sign a contract with Skyttelpass, as their website appeared the clearest and was also available in English. Additionally, Skyttelpass does not charge any annual fees for the tag; instead, a one-time “deposit” of 200 NOK is required. By logging into Skyttelpass’s website later, you can easily add your payment card and track your toll charges.
I chose to pay by credit card, and in addition, copies of the invoices are sent to my email. Although the charges are automatically processed, it’s still a good idea to check the toll charges on the invoice. For example, I noticed a double charge of about 100 NOK for the same toll station, with only a 4-minute difference between the charges. However, it was easy to resolve this with customer service through a single email, and the error was refunded to my credit card.
You can order the AutoPass tag from the Skyttelpass website by clicking on the “Order toll tag PRIVATE” section. First, you’ll be asked to activate your phone number and fill out the contract form. The AutoPass tag will be send to you within 1-2 weeks. I got it even about a week, but I recommend ordering the tag at least two weeks before your trip. Since the package is coming from Norway, which is outside the EU, it will first go through customs when it arrives in Finland.
Ordering Goods from Outside the EU / Customs Fees
When ordering goods from outside the EU (which also applies to Norway), the package must go through customs before it continues its journey to your home address. The shipping company, such as Posti, will send you a notification upon arrival, indicating if the package needs to be cleared through customs. Customs clearance can be done through the personal import declaration service for individuals.
When using the customs service, you must select an appropriate product classification for the contents of the package. Finding the correct classification for a toll tag turned out to be a challenge for me, so I directly asked the customs service via their chat, and they advised me to select “printed products.” Since the value of the tag was 200 NOK, the VAT payable to Finland was 4.84 EUR. Additionally, there is a handling fee of 3.10 EUR charged by Posti for customs-clearable shipments. The VAT is calculated based on the total value of the package and the Posti handling fee. If there were no import duties to be paid, no Posti handling fee would be required to pay.
To simplify, the customs process for goods ordered from outside the EU proceeds as follows:
1) Arrival notice from the shipping company
2) Customs clearance through the personal import declaration service, where you’ll need to provide the value of the item and its classification
3) Pay the Posti handling fee of 3.10 EUR (as of 2026)
4) Customs release decision → the package continues its journey to your home address
Additional Discounts for Bridges and Ferries
As mentioned above, significant additional discounts are available with Autopass for certain toll charges through separate agreements.
Norway
AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement
By making a separate AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, you can receive discounts of up to 40-50% on ferry crossings, instead of the usual 10% discount. This is recommended if you frequently use ferries on your trips in Norway. However, for typical trips, such as those in Southern Norway, this might not be necessary, as the prepayment agreement requires a deposit of 2000 NOK (approximately 150-200 EUR, depending on the exchange rate). This deposit is then used to pay for the ferry crossings. While you do get a discount, if you don’t use the ferries often, it means a relatively large sum of money will be tied up, waiting for your future trips.
Moss-Horten – Bastø Fosen agreement
By making a Bastø Fosen agreement, you can receive a 30% discount instead of the usual 10% on ferry crossings between Moss and Horten, located south of Oslo in Southern Norway.
OTHER COUNTRIES:
The Great Belt Bridge, Storebæltsbroen, Denmark
The Great Belt Bridge in Denmark accepts the Norwegian AutoPass tag as a payment method. When the AutoPass tag is attached to the inside of your windshield, you can drive through the fast green lanes at the bridge, and the toll will be automatically charged, just like other Norwegian toll fees. If you don’t have the tag, you can pay by card in the blue lane or by cash in the yellow lane.
If you have an AutoPass tag, it’s recommended to make a free additional agreement with the Great Belt Bridge. By registering the AutoPass tag number in the agreement, you can receive a significant discount on the bridge crossing. For example, in year 2026, the normal toll for a passenger car crossing the Great Belt Bridge is 235 DKK (over 30 EUR), but with the agreement, the toll is reduced to 205 DKK (about 27 EUR). You can also check the price list for all vehicles on the Great Belt Bridge.
To make the free additional agreement with the Great Belt Bridge, first select your service provider and add your AutoPass tag number to the agreement. However, remember to order the AutoPass tag first, as you will need the tag number to complete the agreement. It’s a good idea to finalize the agreement as soon as you receive the tag number, even if the tag has not yet arrived by post. Activation takes about 4 business days, and after receiving the email confirmation, you can start using the discounts at the bridge. Since the agreement is free and quick to set up, I recommend it for anyone crossing the bridge.
The Øresund Bridge, Denmark-Sweden
The Öresund Bridge in Denmark accepts the Norwegian AutoPass tag as a payment method. It connects Malmö in Sweden with Kastrup in Denmark. In year 2026, the normal toll for crossing the Öresund Bridge with a passenger car is 470 DKK, which is over 60 EUR. You can also check the price list for other types of vehicles crossing the Öresund Bridge.
If you do not own an AutoPass tag, it is possible to purchase a one-time ticket for the Öresund Bridge (valid for 30 days from the payment date) in advance. By subscribing to the newsletter, you can receive a 10% discount off the normal price. If you prefer not to buy the ticket in advance and do not own an AutoPass tag, you can cross the bridge by driving through the yellow lane and pay the full toll in cash or by card.
However, both the additional agreement and the toll tag allow you to receive significant discounts off the standard toll. Unlike the Great Belt Bridge, the Öresund Bridge’s additional agreement comes with an annual fee, so I would recommend it primarily for those who cross the bridge frequently. To receive the discount, you must create an ØresundGO agreement, which costs 370 DKK per year. With this agreement, you can cross the bridge for a one-time payment of 182 DKK, meaning the discount compared to the standard price is significant if you cross the bridge at least twice a year.
Some Ferry Routes from Denmark
Some ferry routes outside of Norway also accept the AutoPass tag as a payment method. For some of these, it is also possible to set up a similar discount agreement as the one for the toll bridges mentioned above. Be sure to look into this, especially if you frequently use these ferry routes.

Installing the AutoPass Tag on the Windshield
When the AutoPass tag arrives at your home address (hopefully before your trip), it’s time to install it. In a passenger car, the AutoPass tag should be placed on the inside of the windshield, in the center near the top, just behind the rearview mirror. If there is a larger shaded or dotted area near the rearview mirror, the tag should be placed there. The tag should be positioned about 3-7 cm from the top edge and must not obstruct the driver’s view.
Start by cleaning the area with the provided wet wipe and dry it thoroughly. Then, peel off the protective cover and press the tag firmly against the windshield for about 10 seconds.
Here are the detailed instructions with pictures for installing the toll tag on your car’s windshield.
